I often wear shirts, but many people still don't know why women's shirt buttons are on the left and men's shirt buttons are on the right.

The buttons on shirts differ according to gender… a discreet detail, but one that hides a fascinating history and a lot about our relationship with fashion.

You've probably noticed this detail before without really paying attention: shirt buttons aren't on the same side for women and men. A small detail, almost invisible… and yet steeped in history! But why does this difference still exist today? And above all, what does it really tell us about our relationship with fashion?

A clothing detail that is far from insignificant

At first glance, it may seem purely aesthetic. However, this choice dates back several centuries and is not a coincidence.

Even today, most women's shirts have their buttons on the left, while men's have them on the right. It's such a deeply ingrained habit that it's no longer even questioned… except when someone tries to put a shirt on the wrong way!

But to understand this difference, we need to go back in time.

A story linked to social status

In the Middle Ages, buttons were not simply practical accessories. Quite the contrary: they represented a true symbol of wealth.

Made from precious materials, they were reserved for an elite. Women from wealthy backgrounds wore richly decorated clothes… but they didn't dress themselves.

That's where everything changes.

Since the majority of people are right-handed, it was easier for someone opposite (an assistant or a seamstress, for example) to button a garment if the buttons were on the left.

This detail thus became a discreet marker of social status: a woman with buttons on the left was often a woman who was helped to dress.
