Ingredients (Makes about 8 pieces):
- 250g mozzarella cheese (or cheese of your choice)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for dough)
- 1 egg
- 100ml warm water (or milk)
- 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)
- Optional: sesame seeds or garlic powder for topping
Instructions:
- Prepare the Cheese Filling:
- Cut the mozzarella cheese into small cubes or strips. Set aside.
- Make the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Add the egg, vegetable oil, and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix until a smooth dough forms.
- If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to overdo it.
- Shape the Bites:
- Divide the dough into small balls, around the size of a golf ball.
- Flatten each ball into a small disc, then place a cube or strip of cheese in the center.
- Gently fold the dough around the cheese and seal it completely, making sure the cheese is fully encased in the dough.
- Fry the Savory Bites:
- Heat the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Once the butter is melted and hot, add the cheese-stuffed dough bites to the pan, making sure not to overcrowd them.
- Fry the bites for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Serve:
- Once fried, remove the savory bites from the skillet and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
- Optionally, sprinkle with sesame seeds or garlic powder for added flavor.
- Serve hot, and enjoy!
Tips:
- For extra flavor, you can add herbs such as oregano or thyme to the dough.
- Try using different types of cheese, such as cheddar, gouda, or even cream cheese, for a variation of flavors.
- These can also be baked in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 20 minutes if you prefer a healthier version.
